Pinned my sciatic - fucking OUCH!!!

I'd always heard the horror stories of the pain associated with pinning glutes and hitting on/near the sciatic nerve. Well, after years of doing this, I finally get to see first hand. Pinned Thursday morning and thought it was bizness as usual, although I did feel a slight zing when I had the pin buried but I didn't really think much of it. It didn't really hurt, just a bit of the ol' electric zap. So I pushed the 5ml of oil in and went to the gym. Later that day I could feel a golfball in there and could def feel it pushing on the nerve. For the past 2 days I have been limping and can barely put my socks on! Took this morning off from the gym to see if a little rest will help it subside. It's very painful to bend over or lay on and last night I had a terrible time trying to find a position to sleep in.

Anybody have any advice for easing the /pain/soreness or speeding recovery? I already know what I did wrong when I pinned so we can forego all that feedback, thank you!

Describe the exact area that you pinned in the quad, if you don't mind. I'm just curious where exactly it was you hit. A lot of people pin quads quads in the wrong spot it seems. I'm not saying you did at all brother. I'm sure you know exactly the right spot, but I'm genuinely curious where you've pinned because I pin quads almost exclusively and have never had a problem so far

Pinned glutes brother. Gonna try it a little more inwards from now on, towards my ass crack more. Been pinning almost totally outer glute all this time. I've had that little "zing" before but I guess I've just been getting lucky until now, seeing as how I've never experienced this type of pip/pain before!

That's my bad bro. For some reason I misread that you said quads which had me scratching my head. From now on I would try and do ventroglute. Don't go back further towards the crack. That can cause you more problems. Or you could just do quads. I love quads

Then I dont believe u hit the sciatic nerve. But u probably hit a nerve. Ive also heard that if u bust a big vein it can hurt pretty bad..there is a big on the right leg

Do you know how to find the ventrogluteal muscle? If you start pinning ventrogluteal you won't be anywhere near a blood vessel or a nerve. It's basically a hip injection but you can get a lot of oil in there without discomfort. It sounds like you irritated the hell out of a peripheral nerve buy pinning the main part of the glute or you could have irritated the gluteal artery. Either way it hurts like hell especially with 5mls in the same muscle. Typically most medical books teach that you shouldn't pin more than 3 or 4 mls in the glutes because of irritation but that's mainly to be cautious. If I were going to pin 5 mls I wouldn't put it anywhere else than in the ventrogluteal area. Gravity is a bitch especially in the glutes, because when you are shooting a lot of oil it's going to settle much lower than the intended spot. If you need help finding the ventrogluteal muscle let me know.

I always want to try ventrogluteal but I'm not quite sure where is and I say fuck it and do a regular glute injection. Ive read people describing it but it is sketchy to do without good visual or somebody showing you exactly where it is

Did heat/ice again during my lunch break, popped a handful of ibuprof and it already feels much better. I'll heat/ice once more before I go to bed tonight and hopefully I can get back to the gym in the AM, and put my socks on without crying like a lil' bitch!

Thanks to everyone for all this great feedback - I can feel the love!

It's really not that hard. If you are going to pin yourself ventrogluteal is much easier, especially for the big guys, than just trying to hit the upper outer quadrant of the glute. If you watch YouTube videos it can make you puss out especially if you don't know what the greater trochanter (basically where your femur attaches to your hip joint) and the iliac crest (very top of the pelvic bone) is. So to simplify everything here's the best way to hit the ventrogluteal muscle. Lay down on your side. Flex your glue and find the crater on the side of your ass cheek. That's basically ballpark of the greater trochanter. Then lift up your leg and find the muscle around you hip that pops up or push against something and feel for the muscle that pops up. Another way to find it is stand up shift your weight from on side to the other and the muscle you feel pop up on your hip is the ventrogluteal muscle. Some say to put your index finger on the top of your ass crack and use your index finger, pointing to you hip to find it. Personally I just lie down find the muscle and shoot. I have never had any PIP in this spot nor do I really even feel the needle go in. I'm a big quad pinner myself and 85% of all of my pinning goes in the quads. Quads can be very painful if you don't know where to pin also but that's another story all together.

Feeling much better today. No limping, killed it in the gym this morning, and put my socks on all by myself like a big boy, with nary a tear! Thanks again to everyone for the all helpful feedback!

Not that it is gonna ease your pain but from what I'm hearing it doesn't sound like you hit the sciatic

Ya if its already getting better you either hit some scar tissue and pissed it off or just hit a small nerve cluster.

This is the sole reason why I dont and never will pin the glutes! Its the most dangerous injection spot. Thats not opinion its fact. Hitting the sciatic nerve can even cause permanent paralysis. There's only one small spot on the top right glute ur even allowed to shoot in and its just too damn risky...especially if u have low bf

Huh? This is a new one for me. To me the glute had the largest room for error of any other muscle.

I got injections from the doc for a while and he said unless you shoot right down the middle of the glute you are good.....can basically hit it anywhere else. I've pinned flutes regularly, for years and years, and never had 1 single nerve issue of any kind.

Put it to u this way. Here in nc they stopped giving birth control shots there because of all the problems it caused

I'm confused by the fact that the sciatic is in no way even remotely close to the ventrogluteal injection site. That area is very easy and nonproblematic

Yes, I'm confused as well. Wherever that infographic came from, it's the first time I've ever heard of such claims. You can go to any number of nursing/med school sites and the most commonly taught/utilized IM injection protocol is dorsogluteal/ventrogluteal site administration.

Those illistrations are for the dorsoglute (the ass) the vent to glute was a seperate article u just happened to see the start of that because I didn't crop it out. The Ventrogluteal article showed it to be the best injection spot. I should have cut it out to eleminate confusion
