Running.

If I run outside typically I'll do 3 miles. The first half 1.5 miles I run straight...then the last half I run sprints and walk in between my sprints...I find myself making better time this way than running straight through.
On the treadmilll I strictly do sprints...I do them with and without incline...I throw in some side shuffles (basically run side ways) and finish off with incline all the way at 15 and walk backwards. Sounds like a lot but it's a killer workout!

If your goal is speed, then you need to slowly get your body used to going that fast. Running is no different than weights in that you need to slowly increase intensity to get your results. Have you invested in a GPS watch that can show you your pace? That is something I would do. After that, Jake gave you some good advice. Hit the track and do 100, 200, 400, 800 etc. If/When you get that GPS watch, hit that 6min goal pace for short bursts to get your body used to it....then jog out a lap or two to build endurance because you're going to need both speed and endurance to hit that 5/30 goal. It's going to be a long process though.

5 in 30 is fast! And for your size, that would be a sight to see. I ran 5 in about 32 something in high school. But everything was in my favor. Overcast to start the run so the sun was beating. Then about mile 4 a light sprinkle started and gave me a cool last two miles. Absolutely perfect. Also we were running as a group doing Indian sprints. Does anyone else call them that? Lol. A group running in line. Last person sprints to the front and keeps the pace until the last person sprints to in front of him. Fucking brutal for 5 straight at that pace.

Hahaha ya no way is it happening at my current size lol. That's for damn sure. As I come down in weight though it should get easier.

It's a bitch man. It really is haha. Highschool days were so much easier with this shit.

No kidding. I could run for days in high school. Longest non stop was about 12-13 miles. But I did a few others longer where we'd stop at a store and grab a drink or the coach would fine us on the road and have us stop for a drink and pep talk lol.

I had an old guy at my Masonic lodge tell me, "you gotta be tough to get old" he would always come in with a new bump or bruise where he fell. LOL and that is so damn true and I think it has been said on here some, that we are older a lot longer than we are young and that's why its important to take things slowly its a marathon not a sprint as you are finding out.

Never thought of that. I just have a running app on my phone for jow. If I don't bring my phone I will drive my route afterwards.

I like to set my self up in the shitiest fucking situation possible and go from there. ( shitty surface, terrain, sand... things like that. converse or boots, no music.) Theory is, if I can succeed there I will exceed else where.

Yeah drb says that youth is wasted on the young! It is way tougher to be old than young for sure. But if you do things right , and carefully think everything out, then you can get old without injury, or meds. The rambunctious way of youth does not promote long term health. He still runs 2 miles and sprints a lot of 100's, so if he can do it at his age then you can get there.

Oh I was well aware of that one haha. Everything is a fucking marathon. At least if you wanna be good at it haha.
Nah we'll get there. One day at a time.

lol that is awesome. I have def done a lot more risk management as I get into my mid 40's. don't do the jet ski, tubing, and shit like that anymore cuz it hurts too bad and too long if I get hurt. much like running I have tremendous shin pumps to the point of crippled much like TX so I walk on an incline treadmill or elliptical for cardio.

So I gather that this is for military requirements. They may say you have to run a mile and 1/2 in under 13 minutes kind of stuff. So here is how you train for that. You make it a goal to run miles required, not time yet, times 3. So if they want you to run 1.5 miles in 13 mins then begin to try for 1.5x3=4.5 miles. Note the time it takes you when you do reach 4.5 miles. As you can run it faster then step it up...just like weights. When you can run the 4.5 in 45 mins then begin to run the 1.5 at least twice per week. So do both the 4.5 and the 1.5.You will quickly be reaching your goals. Not many know this but sprinters normally train by running up to 10 miles 3-4 times per week, and only 2-3 actually sprinting. If you do not build long mileage endurance then it takes longer to increase speed in shorter distances.

I too do not like running which is why I love cycling. However, nothing keeps me more lean and core tight like a couple nice jogs a week. I'm not running mind you just jogging. I also ride a shit load of bikes though too

Wow that training plan could get into some serious mileage when your training for a 5 miler.

I think you meant a 1.5 miler. It don't seem bad. 4.5 miles mwf, and 1.5 Tues&Thurs. Zeke is an Iron Man and does many Tris, so yes he is a freak. He bike rides 40 miles /day with my daughter M-F, in addition to jogging, sprinting, swimming and calisthenics. I can tell you one thing...he is one lean mo fo.

No I meant if your training for a 5 mile run with that plan you'd be hitting 15miles in a clip unless I misunderstood.

Oh for sure. Most of those that run over 5k,10k etc have to train all day.I don't know what they do for money but I do know it takes lots of time ...6 days/week. My younger brother does deep water welding and works 6 months on and 6 off. So he trains low to medium while working and full blown for 6 months when he is off

I actually enjoy running, I use that for cardio..it's weird I fuckin hate elipticals and bikes, love the treadmill. I can't explain it bro.....

I hate cardio inside.. stationary kills me, 10 mins feels like an hour. Gotta get outside for that.

Big boy like you TX, you may have to switch up your forms of cardio depending on how many days you do it a week. You much bigger then me and at 225lbs 5-6 days a week my body feels that shit big time.

Truth. I could run forever on the beach. But on a treadmill inside, it sucks ass lol.
