New raw flat bench PR

Technically it's a no lift off, no spotter PR for me. Ever since I tore my pec benching 4 years ago I've stayed away from heavy lifting with no spotter, but today I was feeling diesel and pounded out a few reps at 405. It was pretty funny because I went thru my usual warm up and routine and when I slapped on 405 about 6 people stopped what they were doing to watch from a distance. I pounded them out like it was nothing, except for the last one- got stuck for a split second at 3/4 rep then finished it. Got up and it was like someone died it was so quiet. I should find a spotter and really kill them, but alas my mentality says "If there's nobody to bail you out, you must lift it.". I love my gear. Don't judge me.

Awesome job, man! I've avoided flat pressing for the past 12 weeks or so since my left shoulder started acting funky. That's some serious weight though, man. Kudos.

And thought I had big balls at 225#. Fuck!!

NEED SOME GAINZ!! PHURIOUS!!

My bro just did 605 and tore and tore his pec all the way to his delt. A mere 12K$ will fix him right up. And the purpose of doing this is what??????

I actually don't flat bench anymore. Haven't done it for years. I stick to incline and decline. Hope your bro has a smooth recovery..

That's allot of weight.. I can't mess with the flat bench at all. My shoulder won't allow it. I really only lift heavy on leg days and I've even toned that back

I know part of it is ego I suppose, but I think in order to stimulate growth you have to lift heavy as hell sometimes. It's progressive, I can remember when I considered 315 heavy, 365, 385, 395, etc... I had been getting stuck at 465 (with lift off) for the longest and that was at 201 lbs. and that's when I tore mine from the sternum all the way across. Couldn't bench anything for a year, yet alone do a push up. This had kept me away from heavy weights for awhile and mentally it was debilitating and my lifting became complacent for months and months. I'm trying to gain as much muscle as possible now and my body responds well to heavy lifting. My arms respond well to this as well as I preacher curl 75 for 10 with ease (have done 90 but hurt my ribs on the curl platform thingy) and can strict seated hammer curl 115 for 6-8. Last measurement was Jan. 2013 at 21.25" before starting gear use again. My squats aren't what they used to be because of my knees, 2 herniated lower disks, 2 upper, sciatica and pinched nerves throughout my neck and back. I do enough volume training to compensate though. I guess the same could be done with chest and arms, but I'm an advocate of heavy lifting despite my age and aches. Besides as long as their are those tall guys with all the genetics in the world that casually lift (my opinion of what they do) and think they can out-bench me I'm always down to remind them of the pecking order. Will I ever bench 605 hell no, wouldn't want to, but I'm an aggressive lifter. I started lifting to release my anger in a healthy manner and there's just that lil' S.O.B. in me that loves to rep for the guys under 5' 10". I haven't tipped the scale since week one of this cycle, but last weigh in was a cunt hair shy of 250. I'm shooting for a lean 255-260. Besides the one guy I do lift with when we are at the gym at the same time is a power-lifter, so medium weight is not an option. I like lifting with him because he's always down to hold clinic and he likes the fact I'll go pound for pound till one of us taps out. So to answer your question about the point of doing all this is I'm partially weetodded like that bro. Just trying to get bigger.

Sometimes my shoulder aggravates me as well, snapped my collar bone in two places and separated my shoulder once. You just gotta build it back up over time, and if it happens again, hell you already know what it feels like so that's a positive somewhat.

Just to be clear...this was a friend of Jake. Not a blood brother. The guy is 6'8 and 315lbs. He lives to show off.
Worst thing for the guy is that he has obama care and the doc wants 6k$ up front b4 performing the surgery. He actually ask drb if he would do the surgery.Big goofball there...but hey...he can bench 600!!!

I haven't flat benched in over a year but could press 405 at a bodyweight of 190 when I did. Much bigger and stronger now but I don't do the ego lift anymore. My shoulders thank me for avoiding it too

The older I get the less I care about how much I lift and the more I care about how I lift the weight. I think PR's are great, but I try to be as safe as possible now. Injuries suck lol.

Slightly over a 2:1 strength ratio is always a good thing. I don't really push myself often and when I do bench typically even on a "bad day" I bench up to 385 for reps. I always try to get some growth stimulus in there with reps. For me the 405 was new in the aspect that I no longer use spotters which is my way of ensuring I maximize my training efforts. I admit, I got complacent as fuck after my injury. It's too easy to really go "ego" with a spotter/safety net there and to me that is of no value in gains. I'd rather be big than strong as hell, but like I said there are those instances where you get those tall guys, or guy in there that think they can fuck with you because you're short. I just play the game, if they wanna try to match me, then we can progress on up till they can't. I guess it's childish, or dick headed of me, but I don't take kindly to guys assuming that because they are taller and have to work less to attain some size that they can try me. I look at the quality and density of their muscle and see the entire story- how long, how often, how heavy and how serious they are about the iron. Respect gets respect and my gym is a community where we salute effort, but some folks come in there brand new and think it's their personal playground. Those are the dudes that have to be humbled. Us short shits have to prove ourselves daily because everyone assumes because you have shorter muscle bellies you can toy around and appear big. Yeah man, being short is a struggle lol.

Lol.. He asked him to do the surgery. WTF. Your pops is a surgeon too!?!

Well if I know drb He will tell him
200cyp/200sus/200deca..eat 3 cans of tuna and come back to gym Monday

thats a very impressive lift for sure... its good that you got it out of your system though... =) i also quit flat benching now for some time because ive seen the damage it does... i will still do it on a smith machine every so often and definitely with dumbells and even on an incline but that flat bench is a shoulders worst enemy... i will say though, 405 is extremely impressive for sure... you should be proud of that lift and also happy you didnt hurt yourself... very nice work
