Kratom is a opioid like designer drug that works on the mu-opioid receptors similar to morphine. However mu-receptor drugs and synthetics have some very scary side effects. Working as a first responder emt/paramedic for my local fire department I have seen first hand some very serious reactions to the drug. Convulsions, extreme anxiety, and other opioid type side effects are pretty common. I'm a chronic pain patient and every drug that was focused more on the mu-opioid receptors gave me the worst and scariest side effects of any pain medication. I personally had severe pain attacks, myoclonic jerks, and extreme changes in heart rate which is fairly common in mu compounds. Kratom comes from a leaf from Thailand and has been used to help with pain but it was banned for a long time and I suspect that it will be scheduled as a controlled substance very soon in the states. These types of drugs have a much greater chance of psychological problems and side effects. Personally I wouldn't ever recommend using it because it's opening a door to a possible opioid addiction especially if you have had any problems with addiction or alcoholism in your past or immediate family. Even if you are lucky enough to not have any adverse effects you can still end up with a very scary addiction especially when it gets banned for sale and you end up in withdrawal and the only thing you can turn to is prescription drugs or worse (herion). I would recommend seeing a good doctor if you are in pain and getting on a drug program where you are monitored regularly. I am dependant on pain medication to function as a fairly normal person but I am not addicted. There is a huge difference between dependence and addiction. So here is my personal recommendation. Don't mess with it. I'm not preaching or passing judgment, because I believe that if you want to get a buzz recreationally from time to time and you're responsible it's your own right as long as you aren't hurting anyone else. However I would say that if you just want to get a buzz get a couple of oxycodone and kick back and enjoy the lack of pain but don't drink with it. I was basically a lab rat for a bunch of new prescription pain killers for about a year. One being nucynta, which is a synthetic mu-opioid drug with an added norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, which is used for help with nerve related pain, and I still have problems from my experience with the drug. On the positive side I have seen a few people addicted to prescription pain killers use kratom to help with withdrawal symptoms of getting off the drugs. For that purpose it can be effective. If you are just looking for a buzz that won't get you popped on a drug test I would recommend something else. I don't smoke weed but a couple of hits off a joint is a much better option than possibly having a seizure from a drug that we just don't have enough information on, or any good studies from long term use. Sure it comes from a plant but so does cocaine, herion, and so on. I just don't see any reason to use it unless you are trying to kick a habit, and you are willing to deal with the potential psychological side effects. Again I apologize for the long message because I am not saying that you are wanting to use it to get high but if you are there are a lot of other things you can take that won't show up on a drug test and have about the same effects. Tramadol would have similar effects and is much safer and has a lot more information. I hope this helps and is a little informative. If you have any other questions feel free to ask and I'll try to answer it to the best of my ability and understanding. I can tell you that kratom isn't going to put any muscle on you lol. However it could supress your appetite, but again there are a lot of safer alternatives for that as well.

Since Kratom isn't regulated you can't be sure of the dosing. I have a buddy that takes it and says that you can't ever tell how potent it is before using it. In my limited experience the "buzz" is really mild. Though it is an mu-opiod receptor agonist it feels more like a weak anxiolytic than anything else. Less is more here. If you take too much you just get an awful headache and nausea. Also, it seems that the first dose in any given 6 hour period is the only effective dose, i.e. if you like to dose so that you can maintain a good buzz over an extended period of time it won't work with kratom. Once your opiod receptors are activated by it, there isn't anywhere for additional kratom to bind until it clears.

It's not really something I would recommend going near with a ten foot pole. What's your reasoning for using it?

Same as you don't believe in any drugs that don't have net positive effect, for me using drugs for anything other than correcting a imbalance or stimulates something positive with little side effects is for the dogs. Getting high for the sake of getting high and escaping reality isn't my cup of tea,.
