Illness and training

So. Over the weekend I was struck down with a stomach bug over the weekend. Experienced vomiting, the sweats, muscle soreness, headaches, the sweats etc. it's been 3 days since the worst of it and I'm itching to resume my training after a few days off. How soon should one get back into training after succumbing something like this?

Theres no cut and dry answer bud. You definitely want to let yourself recover. Stomach bugs like that will dehydrate you quick and put your immune system to work. Taking a week off wont cause any harm towards gains. Just focus on getting better and when you feel ready, hit it hard.

there's no formula here on when to come back... you just need to know your body and know when you are back or near 100%... resuming too early can only be detrimental and can prolong the illness or injury...

your biggest competition is yourself. take the time off. mentally hard but your body needs it. don't worry you wont lose any progress in a week

well said and very true.. often times we are our own worst enemy...i have done this for so many years, training when sick etc... it tends to always backfire... sometimes yes and sometimes no but you tend to push harder when your sick to overcompensate things and that's the last thing you should be doing when your immune system is down.. just be smart and don't do something that will only prolong the problem...

Everyone nailed it. That week off will do more good than harm. I tore my labrum. That's way worse. I was out for 5 months. No surgery. I go to an A R T doctor so he keeps me going. I just don't over do it anymore. The first two weeks off were fine. After a month passed, I actually got bigger and more full lol. I still ate as if I was training. Maybe because I never took a break from training, which I should be doing, my body just absorbed everything and people even told me I got fuller and I wasn't working out. Obviously after that month little by little you will start to see a decrease in size.

My point? Tske the rest of the week off. Recover and heal. Not only will your muscles tendons Thank you, but so will your nervous system. Enjoy!

Just listen to your body, and you'll know when it's time to go back to hitting the gym. When you are anxious to get in there, and feel like doing it you'll be ready.

if I get sick, I switch to isometrics instead of reps/weights. Get good time under tension.

Unless its lung related, then its rest. Any lung congestion, its rest time

you can always just sit in the sauna as well and get a nice sweat going and not do anything strenuous..

Good rule of thumb I think would be time sick = time off to recover. You don't want to start back up in a weakened state. Hydrate, heal, get your strength back up. That's how I see it.

just stay hydrated, get plenty of rest, dont push it and get good quality sleep... go to bed a little earlier than you may normally... it will only benefit you.. your body needs it...

Thanks for all the feedback guys. Got back into it yesterday. Just easing back for the next week before smashing it hard again.
