Finding that "balance" in Bodybuilding

Good post rick. Obsessiveness usually leads to disorders. Too obsessed with eating less and less leads to anorexia, and this is just one example of how a bad mental problem can pop up from being obsessive. "Moderation is key" is a saying that has been around forever and applies to everything in life. You can overdo anything to the point of it becoming unhealthy.
I loved being an iron head and having my whole family with me,but we all do lots of other things too. We are supposed to live life. As for the cake, pizza beer etc...it has been so long that just don't care for it. If I eat anything junkie I feel it right away. So food is up to the person. There was always cake at our birthday parties, but the cake was from scratch and the ice cream was home made. Still, there was always lots left. But not to worry..there was always some friend or neighbor that would gladly take the leftovers.
I do not deny myself anything, it just has become that I do not feel deprived if I don't eat shitty food. A nice big popular bakery by our house when my kids were young. Then when Izzy was a teen he went and worked there one summer. He made most of the icing. When he saw it was Crisco shortening and powdered sugar just whipped together he never ate store bought pastry or cake again. I always told them that cake was shit. Lard, flour,sugar...man I am glad I have no desire for it. But if an iron head happens to love it then sure...work it in as part of you plan and calorie intake. No need in feeling deprived, because that usually leads to failure.

Agreed Drb. Enjoying life is what you make it. For some like yourself, there just is no desire to stray from your diet and I respect that. I just feel sorry for those that feel they are depriving themselves of things or experiences in life. Moderation in this whole lifestyle is the key.

The bottom line is yes discipline is needed, and so is balance. That is one of the reasons I never wanted to compete.I knew I would turn nutty fruitcake on myself and become obsessed. I worked out for some time with a good competitor named Boyer Coe, and I would cut when he cut, cycle with him etc. The cut with 3 days of tuna, then steak and eggs sounds like fun, but it is so grueling that it messes with your head. We were good for each other in that we thought the same and neither of us would surrender. He doesn't wear his wig anymore but he still looks really good. He is one year older than I am and I think he could hang with anyone in the gym. A good guy too!
He is the perfect example of keeping it in balance
