Water intake and retention

Ok. I'm trying to explain to a friend about how dehydration can cause bloat and everything. So then he said well since we over hydrate we also have water retention. I tried explaining that no, you just pee more. But he is always a hard one to convince anything. Once his mind is set, there's not much that can be done.
Does anyone have an article that can help me out. That over hydration does not cause retention and bloat?

Ok and I guess the main issue was he doesn't see how being over hydrated doesn't cause excess body weight from water retention.

It's actually quite simple. More in equals more out. The hormone aldosterone controls your body's water levels. It always adjusts accordingly. When you increase water intake, it drastically increases output to create a flushing effect. When it senses underhydration, it basically shuts off the output and goes into survival mode, CAUSING water retention. The more water you drink the dryer you will be, and this is fact.

That's why for instance when going into a show, water intake is drastically increased the final days leading to a show then shut off the night before. Your body will be flushing like crazy, and when you stop the water, your body takes a bit to realize that continuing to flush more, and you wake up dry as hell

Wow is this great information, answered some questions that I had. Thanks for sharing

Well said RR.

Great explanation Rick. Thanks. So is it safe to say that you can have more water weight in your body when dehydrated than with good hydration?

I had a nerve conduction study done recently..they put needles in u and shock the piss out of u..it hurt like a bitch. Doc said it hurt me more than others because I was lean and my muscles held water good. I said doc that ain't cool lol. She didn't understand why I thought muscle holding water good was a bad thing lol

muscles holding water is different then subcutaneous water retention. glycogen is mostly made up of water, so when glycogen is pushed into muscles that is a form of "water retention". glycogen is pushed in there and it makes your muscles Full. for this you can also think of creatine monohydrate. but the water retention people are usually referring to is mainly subcutaneous, a watery film or a fluffy layer that hides your cut and makes you look smooth or bloated. like a female.

i have never looked smooth or bloated carb loading. in fact when you do a period of carb depletion and then carb load, it increases your glycogen storage capacity, and it has always made me look fuller AND more vascular. never puffy or smooth. if you eat an extreme excess of carbs that could happen but have to use common sense..
