Rant!: People that put a price on their health!

So I get a call from my Mother this morning and she tells me that she is considering getting the lapband procedure so that she can finally lose weight. She said that it was going to cost $9000 to get done but its worth it. I went into a speech about how her priorities and mentality needs to change because while that procedure will change her appearance, it won't correct all of the issues that regular exercise and proper nutrition will. She agreed. I told her that I think she needs to get a personal trainer. She said "you're supposed to be my trainer!" Even though I am a certified trainer through NASM I explained to her that it can be difficult training family members because its hard for them to listen and take instruction from you ESPECIALLY if you're training them for free. And since I'm not going to charge my Mother and I want her to get the most out of personal training, I recommend that she hire one because I know how much she values her time and money. Her response was..."I don't know if I can do that." That response had me so frustrated!!!! WHY DO PEOPLE PUT A FUCKIN' PRICE ON THEIR HEALTH?!?!?!?! Why do people always look for a discount when it comes to their health? Always looking for the cheapest and easiest route to reach a goal. I told her that when I lost 125lbs in 8 months, my intensity and drive had to match my situation. I was extremely obese so I had to work extremely hard to reap extreme results! There is no way around it. Newton's 3rd Law states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. If you're insanely fat and out of shape, you can't half-ass your way to being in shape! You have to put in some damn work!!!! That's a universal fact proven by the laws of fuckin' physics!!!!! Of Course I spoke to my mother with love, kindness and encouragement but this mentality is something that has been bothering me ever since I got serious about my health and fitness years ago. When people who hadn't seen me in a while or watched my progress asked how I lost so much weight and put on muscle and did this and that and the dreaded "what do I need to do to get the results that you did?", my answer almost always disappointed them. I guess they wanted to hear about some miracle drug I took and not how I restricted my caloric intake to 1500cals a day and exercised as much as 3 times a day for a year. Working out on my lunch break instead of being a lazy fat ass like I did for the first 20 years of my life. Those people that asked me the "what do I need to do to get the results that you did?" question had the nerve to say, "Well I can't do all of that!" when I gave them an answer! SMH. Sorry about the long post...this has been building up.

Thats everyone no body wants too work for it. Like when guys question me about gear and want too know what they will get from it I tell them I can easily multiply your results times 3 or 4 and they get excited till i remind them 4×0=fucking dick!!! You get what you put in

Exactly! It seems people understand this in every other aspect in life but for some reason it doesn't apply to health and fitness.

Like Gymjunkie said everyone wants the results, but noone wants to put in the required labor. They drop the word physical from physical fitness and assume that skipping the snickers everyday will yield magical results. I love when people say 'I'm trying to get like you'. I chuckle simply because inside my head I'm laughing thinking about their effort levels I see in the gym. How can you want to look like me when you shuck and jive in the gym and train with people who look like shit? Pushing yourself apparently became harder over the years. Somehow, somewhere people decided being a slack pussy was alright. Getting big isn't hard, it simply requires effort. If you think of it as a necessity it happens just like taking a shit, or breathing. You just gotta do it. I obviously breathe and shit quite a bit lol.

They don't have their priorities in line with their goals and aspirations. If getting big or losing weight is what I want to do then in my mind I'm going to adjust my schedule and priorities as much as possible to accommodate that goal! Its that simple. Its like when they ask you how can you eat 6,7, or 8 times a day....because I make time to do it. If you sit at a desk like I do, its no reason why you can't get your meals in! LOL. Its like they turn the simplest shit into advanced quantum mechanics. All it takes if EFFORT like you said brother.

Excellent post and I share your frustration. I encounter people on a weekly, if not daily, basis that simply can not grasp the concept of CONSISTENT diet and nutrition. My initial thought is to bring intelligence into the mix, but most of these people are very smart. Most are smarter than me. So I find myself thinking, "what the F*** is wrong with these people?" All I can come up with is that "WE" simple value health, fitness and nutrition more than other people do. If something is important and is a priority, you do what has to be done to meet your goal. The principles to success are the same whether it's fitness, wealth or a business. Action x Consistency = Results. Most people say getting in shape is a priority, but when it comes down to it, it's really not. It's just a thought, followed by no action. I am guilty of doing this in other areas of life at times. This difference is, I know why I don't achieve certain things....it's because I am not doing what I need to do because it's obviously not a priority. Then of course, there are those people who are only dreamers. All thought and never any action. They usually succeed at nothing.

I love how they simply say we're vane, or self obsessed... we get judged based upon our priorities being different.

Right. They say that kind of stuff to make you feel bad about being "obsessed" with taking care of yourself but then expect no one to bat an eyelash when they talk about how they binge watch Netflix over the weekend. I guess being lazy and obsessing over a TV show is considered normal behavior.

Well said man. You said that you're guilty of the "no action, all thought" in other areas in life but you know why you don't achieve certain things. You just pointed out the underlying problem with a lot of people...the lack of personal accountability! No one wants to take blame or responsibility for the situations that they find themselves in when 9 times out of 10 its the direct result of their own action or non action. And on top of that most people are ReActive instead of Proactive. They'd rather wait until they have diabetes and have to take a shit load of medicine before they start eating right. That irks me.

F*** them, let them call us vain or self obsessed...meanwhile in my head I'm thinking "There you go, keep stuffing your face you fat F***!"

My mom is overweight, possibly obese and she claims that when she loses weight she doesnt feel like herself and/or she has friends and family that tell her she starts to look sick...i guess they/she have grown to accept "that" look from her...it puzzles me because she is diabetic, cancer survivor and takes 2 handfuls of pills a day due to all her health problems.

Growing up I had a coach that taught me about "Personal accountability." Short story time: Back in high school, A handful of us were failing World Literature so Coach held his own after school tutorial. During this tutorial he asked why we were failing. Of course we blamed it on everything from the teacher to the test being to hard. He asked, "Well, did anyone in the class make an A?" Yes, of course they did, so it's not the teacher or the test. The problem lay with our inability to apply ourselves. So we ran ALOT of laps that day. From then on, if we failed a test and coach asked why, the answer was always short, " I failed because I didn't apply myself." That was it, no laps. If you came up with some lame ass excuse then you had better plan on running for the rest of the day.

Now days, when I hear people make excuses, instead of looking at them and shaking my head, I try to look at myself and think "Am I making excuses somewhere in my life?"

We, blacks, get settled in on the idea that the shit is normal to have weight issues and eat poorly. All my wifes sisters are overweight, one to the point that blob describes her best, the other two are 50 and 52 and assume that it's acceptable. I can go to my gym and show you a 50yo dime piece today. People make any excuse to compensate for their shortcomings. Hell, I'm sipping on a Coke excusing myself for that guilty pleasure right now, but I eat right and am headed to the gym momentarily... but this fucking Coke is deelish no lie lol.

Family members said the same thing to my mother in law when she lost a lot of weight and have done the same to my mother in the past when she has made her attempts at being healthy. Misery loves company...even if its your own family.

People nowadays are only concerned with the easy way out and a shortcut to get where they want. Nobody wants to work for anything anymore. Everybody is looking for a certain look, but health is never the reason it seems....and they will take the easiest route to get there without a concern for their own safety. This is the society we live in
