My thoughts on training... for you slackers

I lift out of love, not habit, not because there's nothing else to do. This is not casual, it's purpose filled. Ever since I was a kid and picked up my first issue of Flex magazine I've been on this journey. Lifting got me through my tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sane, it helped me to funnel my anger and self loath into a pill to swallow before each session, each bench press contest, each curl, each rep. So lifting in essence is me. I lift heavy as fuck with no spotter because it's absolute. If it's too much my life is on the line and that's the only way to live sometimes. I told my son, when I'm on my death bed pin me and when I die put a DB in my casket during the viewing. This ain't recreational it's a dark twisted road and it leads to one place... Muscleville and I'm good with that.
When I read about some kid wanting to pin gear, or pop orals because his friends are jacked it eats me alive because they have no passion for this. They don't value the sacrifice they are making. I chose TRT, I knowingly decided to put gains first for me. I made viagra a main stay, I knew what I was giving up. So basically fuck you if you have a casual I wanna tone a little bit and look like I did in high school attitude, cuz when I was in high school I was curling 70's, benching 315 on incline, squatting 14 forty-fives for 20 reps at 210 pounds and 7% bf with an 8 pack. This hobby of yours has been my 2nd profession for 33 years bitch. So spend your money on Gold Standard protein and fat burners at GNC.. I'm spending mine on Gear. It's all good... we all ain't built for this shit... follow me, I'll lead the way bro.

While i agree with what you say, I disagree.

You lift heavy because thats you. I dont. That doesnt make me any less of a man then you.

It doesnt matter why they are here. Whether its to look like wolverine or phil heath or just look good at the beach and feel good about themselves.

Every goal is everyones own goal. And we should uplift all goals and mentor accordingly.

Now as far as steroids for young kids i say hell no. Go put in the work first and develop naturally.

If i wanted to be a physique competitor i dont want to lift hard an heavy. I need to shape. Because u cant be overly big. You need a decent back good chest some shredded delts and abs w decent triceps and who cares about your legs.

Heavyweight bbers need to be big and huge as possible and shredded as fuck to show the striations, vascularity and muscle bellies and muscle maturity with perfect symmetry.

Look at all of us. Dylan is shredded as fuck. And walks around every day like a piece of steel. His goal isnt to get as big as possible and lift everyday. Does that make him not worthy? No

Almightys goal is to be as big and as strong as possibe. He doesnt care about abs and stupid shit like that he just wants to be big and strong. Does that make him wrong? No

I lift to stay healthy because i play sports at a high comeptitive level. Im strong i got muscles. But i cant be 250#. I wouldnt be able to run down fly balls and make great plays in the outfield. I lift for what my goal is. Does that make me wrong? No

As a mentor you have to respect every goal and advise accordingly to THEIR needs not what u think needs are.

Just food for thought.

We need to mentor all goals and know how to fine tune for each type. Not just what we believe to be the only way

Well P, I kinda said my love for the game developed as a kid... in the 80's physique didn't exist back then so I am solely addressing my era when I fell in love with it. As for lifting heavy I clearly said 'I lift heavy as fuck with no spotter because it's absolute. If it's too much my life is on the line and that's the only way to live sometimes', again strictly my method providing an explanation as to why I do it. Would I recommend lifting as heavy as I do with no spotter for someone else? Not unless they are willing to risk their lives as I clearly am because each of my final reps I have to decide whether to risk it and often have to will it up for the last few inches... to me pending severe injury and death is a helluva motivator. I have yet to see another gym goer in my gym, or any I frequent benching 485 with no spotter for reps. My philosophy is spotters make you dependent upon the expectation of an assist... and yet we both know it's a matter of safety. All I offered was MY thoughts, referencing only MY method of training. Never did I critique anyone for being shredded, or being in love with physique competition. Unless you read something I didn't... I did critique this lifter: "So basically fuck you if you have a casual I wanna tone a little bit and look like I did in high school attitude" and that is the ass hat who should never require AAS use.
We all have our individual goals and reasons... I respect any mother fucker who loves and lives the iron, I just expressed my desire for each of us to be dead ass serious about what we do, or was that point not made? Dylan is serious as fuck about it, Alpha too and he talks about it more so than I. We all love it and the title explicitly says " My thoughts on training... for you slackers"... they (the slackers) are the dicks writing in talking about having 1-2 years of lifting under their belts and wanting to look like Ulysses if you read that 20 year old losers thread. If he gets offended, I could give two fucks. He is what hurts our game, this lifestyle. Just my food for thought bro. No offense taken, just read past the venting to get the true message.

Great points by both of you.I don't lift as heavy as I could most of the time cause I always have that fear of injury.I've torn muscles before doing just that.Injuries suck ass & surgery sucks even more!I'd rather do a few more reps than add another plate or two.You basically get the same results.

I like the post. We all have different goals but agree that you have to have passion for it. Doing it for other people is sad. I started lifting in Afghanistan myself and I haven't stopped since. The adrenaline of imagining something could pop off at any moment would push me hard and I gained a good 10-15lbs naturally that year on MREs. Sometimes I wish I could work out in that cold tent gym again up on mount Jaji.

Everybody has different goals, and different ways to get there. It doesn't ,eat any one is better than the other. My goals and aspirations are different than a lot of people, but that's what I'm after. I dont knock anyone else or look down on anyone else for what their goals are. I don't care if you are trying to be a jacked 300lb bodybuilder, a crossfitter, a physique guy, cyclist, powerlifter, or a tennis player. We all have different dreams and aspirations. I do what I do for ME, and no one else. I'm very happy with where my physique is. I'm lean, agile, healthy, but still big and strong as hell. It's exactly what I'm after. Of course I'm far from done. We are never really done. I'd like about 10 to 15 lbs more of lean mass and I'll be right where I want to be. For me it's about reaching your goals, while staying humble and giving support to all those trying to achieve their own goals from beginner to the advanced, even when those goals don't support your own ideals.

I have to agree with PHURIOUS on this one. As much as I loathe watching the crossfit guys in my gym do their thing I probably couldn't do half the stuff they do nor do I want to. We all have different goals and they should all be respected.

This wasn't meant as a slam on anyone or anything... just a "whatever you do be serious about it". If anyone takes offense to it... sorry, if you need it.

Good post, both of you! I understand those partyers who eat and drink cocktails on weekends and see some of them in gym tying to spend all week recovering from what they did to themselves over a 2 day period with vodcă and god only knows what else. But you still need to take a break and have fun sometime!! Away from gym and live life letting stress out and is not necesar to be drinking to excess as way of winding it down!! I have suggested to many to use biofeedback as way of finding stress points and how to deal with it. We have our different means for working out and our reasons. I have been broken in 218 different places after motor vehicle accident and am concern about going to hard to fast because I have more steel in me than old Pontiac. My goal is 215/220 at 180 Centimitres (5 foot 11 inch for Americans) because at my injuries, body type, fame and size, this is what I can handle. Young dudes who want a short cut and think steroid is answer? Throw a copy of Bigger, Leaner Stronger at them, by Michael Matthews. Until they understand what is in there, you are wasting your time with them and even as medical professional I know I will not get though to many!

Todays younger people, especially in this county, are spoiled! They want it fast and now. They do not understand that even though is muscle, at 170 CM height (5 foot 7) if you are 250 lbs of muscle, you are STILL overweight! Can you heart handle it better? Yes! Train for you body type. I lift to stai healthy because of my injuries and my job as medical profession is VERY demanding of me in term of strength, body and mind. Also because I work for modeling agency and when photographer want to use me in foto shoot, I can not say I do not like it! Am dead ass serious about what am doing! I hope most of us are. 44, your point was well made! But can make suggestion to you? Many times I see you blowing off and think - I wonder where the hell his blood pressure is at! - Can I recommend getting biofeedback monitor? It will help manaj stress which will help keep you out of Stage 1 or higher Hypertension, something that as man of your ancestry, you are subject to more than us, including Olive skin Eastern European Român dude like me! You are 1.5 times more likely to suffer cerebral vascular accident or stroke! This would end your passion for this activity fast!! Biofeedback and having a sphygmanomometer (Blood pressure cuff) and practicing mental relaxation techniques will help you to let it go! Unwind. I never said much and you and I now know each other except from this forum, but I have to say sometimes I have seen your rants and think ”Oh shit! He is prime candidate for serious stroke!”

I do not try to tell anyone how to live. I try to tell them how much I would really like it if they do not show up in ambulance at my ER. Been here myself. When a well heeled lady like my Aunt Helene who was Scot, raised me in Great Britain, I do not believe anyone made her as irritated as I did! I knew I press all he buttons when she tense up and shout at me ”Oh my god! You could not be anything but a Român, you stubborn obstinate infuriating hard headed bastard!”

We all love the sport for difference reasons.
